SARASWATI

I pray onto you – clad in a white sari and holding a Veena, your chosen instrument.

You bring forth talent onto me.

You bring forth me as free.

Blessed by you, as able to read

In English and Sanskrit;

You enlighten on what’s been writ.

You, India’s all-seeing eye, you teach me

To question and gaze beneath the surface

As the goddess of knowledge and writing.

The details are jarring and tease me, the reader,

To unravel the mysteries of mankind.

I pray onto you – instruct me on how to look beyond the background and observe the whole picture.

Reading is art where we both undo the puzzle

To see the entire portrait, for you are also the goddess of craft.

Teach me comprehension and gain solidarity through the work at art, poetry, or literature.

By learning to read analytically, I master creativity by your hand, taking my own hand into a fantasy land – unbeknownst to others and gifting the claimant with perception.

Through these new worlds, I learn what is hidden in the shadows – onto the opening where I become a new person.
